“The survivors forgotten by justice” wins the 2022 Breach-Valdez Prize
May 12, Mexico City – A report about women who survived attempted femicide has won the Breach-Valdez Prize, which honours human rights and freedom of the press.
Mexico City, May 12, 2022 – The United Nations Information Center (CINU); the Office in Mexico of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (ONU-DH); the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Mexico; the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Mexico; the Embassy of France in Mexico; the Embassy of Switzerland in Mexico; the Press and Democracy Program (PRENDE), the Journalism Area of the Communication Department of Ibero-American University (Ibero | Journalism); the France Presse News Agency (AFP) and Reporters Without Borders (RSF) are pleased to announce the winners of the fourth edition of the Breach/Valdez Journalism and Human Rights Award: first place goes to Gloria Piña; and second place goes to Wendy Selene Pérez and Paula Mónaco Felipe.
The independent jury composed of Mariclaire Acosta, Darío Fritz, María Idalia Gómez, Edison Lanza, Sara Lovera López, Blanche Petrich Moreno, José Reveles, Simona Raquel Santiago Maganda, Kau Sirenio Poquinto, Samir Tounsi, and Griselda Inés Triana López decided to award first place to the work “The Survivors Forgotten by Justice” by Gloria Piña. Second place has been awarded to Wendy Selene Pérez and Paula Mónaco Felipe for the research “Looking at Our Death, Female Expert in Mexico,” which recounts the battles women face in criminology and forensic sciences. The story is divided into four parts and shows the lives of several women who, even at the risk of being the next victims, experience femicides from their vantage point. The jury recognized this work for its originality.
Wendy Selene and Paula Mónaco Felipe will receive a double scholarship at Ibero-American University, Santa Fe campus, which includes the same benefits already mentioned
